First Contact Practitioner Service

First Contact Physiotherapists

The role of First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) in Primary Care is to assess patients with soft tissue, muscle and joint pain and to decide on the most appropriate management pathway. FCPs are physiotherapists and osteopaths with expertise in the assessment and management of Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. They may also be known as Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APP) or MSK Practitioners. See our services section for more details.

They accept referrals with the following criteria;

  • Back pain, Neck pain
  • Shoulder Pain, Knee Pain, Ankle Pain, Elbow Pain,Wrist Pain
  • Any muscle injuries, strains/sprains/tears
  • After joint surgery e.g. knee/hip replacement, shoulder surgery
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis – any joint
  • All sports injuries

Why see an FCP instead of a GP?

Around one in five people book in to see their doctor with a neck, back, joint or muscle problem, and often have to wait for a GP referral to get access to physiotherapy advice for their conditions. Seeing an FCP gives you the opportunity to see the right person at the right time. The expertise of the FCP means that you will have quicker access to the treatment you need.
